Renters Matter!

  • Cambridge, MA 02139 (map)

Renters Matter.

Moving Day is fast approaching (Sept 1): a stressful, chaotic day that highlights the precarity and instability that we face renting in a city like Cambridge. Every year, the rents go up and up, and more and more of us have to wrestle with whether Cambridge is a place we can continue to call home, or a place we have to leave because we can’t afford it anymore.

Municipal elections are a major opportunity to fight for renters’ needs - but many renters don’t even know that the elections are happening. Others don’t know how to tell the differences between the candidates, or don’t realize how much of a difference a pro-renter City Council can make in creating more housing options, making housing more affordable, and strengthening tenant protections. The numbers are staggering: while 63% of voters over the age of 65 vote in Cambridge municipal elections, only 22% of voters under 30 do.

Help us volunteer to pass out flyers in Cambridge's squares to tell people about the upcoming A Better Cambridge candidate forum!

Starting on Tuesday, Sept 5 and continuing through September 10, we’re going to be passing out flyers to get the word out about the election and about ABC’s candidate forum.
Will you sign up to take a shift?

Flyering is a great way to get involved for the first time; we’ll pair you with someone experienced, and you’ll spend a short amount of time during peak commuting hours standing in a main square and passing out flyers. You’d be surprised how many passersby are excited to talk about housing issues in Cambridge, and are eager to share their experiences and frustrations around finding an affordable home.
Every hour we spend is likely to get a handful more voters to tune into the forum on Tuesday, September 12th, and help drive home the message: in Cambridge: Renters Matter.
